The League Kitchen and Tavern

The League Kitchen and Tavern on UrbanspoonWell it is nice to actually find a place that I can’t say anything bad about. As readers know, that does not happen often. So it is nice to know that there are still a few get the Blueberry Muffin French Toast *and* the Chicken and Biscuit with Jalapeño Truffle Gravy. The Meatloaf is excellent as well. type of places still around.

We headed out on a Sunday, hoping to find some American fare, possibly a nice brunch or something. Strangely enough when we turned in, I had just said – when driving by yesterday – “Let’s go try that place, looks like it might be American.” I have to say…my dreams came true.

We picked the place because Urbanspoon.com and Yelp.com gave it high reviews. 90+% is not bad, especially in a sea of mediocre places that compare to a grade school cafeteria.

When you walk in you are greeted with a wall with a huge photo from the 20′s of some cook cats. Above them in Neon is;, of course you know we had to proceed left.

The bar is a nice, long, L-shape, with just enough seats (unless it gets busy, which I hear it does weeknights). The LCD’s do not even detract from the decor, which is 1920′s meets 1970. Overall, the place has a dark look, even with the wall of windows…much like a Speakeasy style decor.

We sit down and are greeted by Lindsey, who was awesome in explaining everything on the menu, and she could not say anything bad about any item on the menu, and overall just loved working there. You could tell that both she and the owners take pride in good people, good food and keeping the place clean and in very good order. They take pride, and it shows.

So we had the brunch. It is a two-part buffet:
(1) They have a buffet style, with the standard fare, fruit, and breakfast nom’s. They do however add the League flair to a simple buffet with Egg Casserole, Mac & Cheese (not the truffle one as on the regular menu), Meatloaf (with chipotle ketchup), Parmesan Cheese Hash Browns, Pork Loin (with habanero mango sauce).
(2) Order off the menu for; Blueberry Muffin French Toast, Chicken and Eggs Benedict…stuff I forgot now because I am in such a food happy comma.

You can order as much as you want of the #2 off the menu and they have no problem with that since the portions are small (which is a good thing). I had two of the Blueberry Muffin French Toast.

I’m really happy to say that everything was awesome! We will be back and it is now at the top of the list for Lakeway eats. It is in the same complex as Santa Catarina which now is on the #2 spot for Lakeway eats!

Hopefully, the next time we come back we’ll catch Lindsey as the bartender, she was awesome and suggested all of the things we tried. Maybe we’ll see one of the desserts – which we shared the recipe with her during our visit – on the menu. However, I somehow doubt that our simple desserts are even in their league. Here’s to hoping.

Your Mom’s Burger Bar

Your Mom's Burger Bar on UrbanspoonNot often do I take the time to hash out a review from my phone, this is one reason I don’t tweet, I have far more to say. Not the point, point is Mom’s. It has gone way down hill.

20120712-125127.jpgI know it was never quick, he’ll it was horribly slow, but now it is even worse. We waited 13min standing at the counter while they guy cooked. His ‘one minute’ turned into 13, to just order. There are only 11 people here, and 8 of them have food.

We finally order and sit down at the side stools since the inside is cooler than being outside.

The place is a f’ing mess. There is no silverware out, nothing has been wiped down, and the whole is filthy.

There is no sugar or sweeteners anywhere, and half the tea dispenser does not work. I noticed sugar, but no artificial sweetener after I took the photo. So there it is.

20120712-125206.jpgI have been listen to others order and they don’t do 2 or 3 of the burgers on the menu. Not that it would be hard to reprint those, since there are only 3 of them.

It has really gone to hell, I am surprised they can even pass their inspection!

40 minutes later still waiting on two burgers, so really can’t review the food yet.

So I felt the need to actually type more on a real keyboard, since it was so bad.
After 56 minutes the food finally came. You would think that after such a long time, I had prepared my self for disappointment, but it is hard to set a bar as low as they achieve.

I remember the first week they were open, I went there. It tool a while, just over an hour to get food, but there was a reason. They hand made everything you ordered. You could mix and match the ingredients that they put inside the burger on the fly. No questions asked. Now it comes like the menu states (only it does not come as well).

You can see that my “Willie Nelson” looks horrible. The patty use to be large and in charge, now it is a shadow of it’s former self. Much like a crack addict after a lifetime of abuse. Busted.

At least it had cheese in it, which was not all that tasty. The meat tasted far from fresh, as the might have made the patty last Monday. Overall just disgusting.

They describe this on the menu as “1/2 lb burger stuffed with american cheese, tossed in honey BBQ sauce, wrapped in bacon, topped off w/a fried OH!!!! ring, B.B. King Sauce on texas toast.” Where do I start, I mean they don’t capitalize Texas or American, but B.B. King. Never-mind, jut on the food.  It was not wrapped in bacon, unless you define wrapped as 3 tough stringy pieces that looked and tasted if they had been cooked in March. The meet patty was small, smaller than you would figure, but they said 1/2 pound, I didn’t have my scale handy.

The fries were were soggy and just so so.

So skip this place and I would suggest not even going to the new location (if they have it open yet) as this one just continues to swirl the bowl.

I left the photo of the ATM that is broken just for you to oogle at.

…its been a while

Well all, I know it has been a while since I have done some updates. Life gets in the way of stuff sometimes. I mean not in the way of eating, but just in the way of putting pen to paper or fingers to keys as it were.

So I am going to audit all of my credit card charges since September of last year and get some reviews going. I have no idea how close or far I am away from still being the #1 Urbanspoon.com blogger in Austin, and honestly it does not matter anymore. What matters more is being able deliver my little slice of optimism that the next tasty morsel might be something I have never had, or the best that I have had.

I only hope that it gives all of you the desire to go try something new and tasty. I have met quite a few eaters in the few months and have told them all to visit iEatAtTheBar.com, and this weekend, I told another kind couple and that was the catalyst to get me to put ups some more reviews.

I am not going to worry with the dates of my actual trip to the joint, and will review it if it is still open. It matters not if it was 7 months ago or 7 hours, most places in my experience are good for at least 7 months, as it takes usually 12-16 months if a gradual slide in quality or service is onset.

Also, since talking to folks this weekend, it seems that I am often recommending the best place for this, or that, Tex-Mex, Burgers, Steaks, lunch, breakfast…so I will work on my top eats for most all the types of food that I review. Not a top 10, but just a list to answer the question “I want the best burger in town, where do I go?”

So get ready for a flood, since I still eat out every meal, with the odd take out while on the couch. I might even figure out how to cross post my stuff on Yelp, even though I don’t consider Yelp the best resource, since I think that most of the bad reviews are just ex-employee’s that are pissed at the manager that fired them. More on that later, if I dig on the Yelp cross posting.

Oh, and don’t think this blog has been sold off for millions or some such shit, as that is not the case. Yeah, yeah, I have ad’s down there, but honestly on a yearly basis, they probably amount to buying 10 ice tea’s. On that note, I honestly had someone want to buy ad space back in October, but just forgot to get back with them. I mean I am not in this for free food or fame, well maybe just a little fame. I mean I am like most people that have oddities happen to them when eating…so it is probably easy to identify with me…if you’re crazy, or um, hungry.

Enjoy!

Ross Old Austin Cafe

Ross' Old Austin Cafe on UrbanspoonOnce again I wanted some home cooking. Seems like I have been craving that lately, or is it just that what I have found is just not that good? Who knows.

Ross to the rescue! Ross’ Old Austin Cafe has been up on North Lamar for a long time, at least longer than most can remember. Their history is long, back from when Austin was tiny. Back to the 1940′s…but I forget the history.

Ross’ is home cooking, American, and dependable. They always have the standard fare, such as Chicken Fired Steak, Chopped Steak and Catfish. The sides are what you would expect, green beans, mashed and baked potatoes, fried okra, and a salad bar.

I always go with the Chopped Steak or the Chicken Fried Steak, as both are very good. You just can’t go wrong with either. The salad is always good, you fix your own right where you order, and don’t forget the Pickled Okra – which is real tasty.

I finish up by getting cantaloupe on my salad plate first and save that for last. The deserts are not really like Mom makes, and is why I usually stick to the cantaloupe.

Pardon the photo, I was hungry and forgot until I was almost done. I will try to include a photo on my posts from here on out.

Keifer’s Cafe

Kiefer's Cafe on UrbanspoonI always wanted to go back to this place after trying it for the first time a while ago. The only problem is they are only open for Breakfast and Lunch and only weekdays. Must be nice.

Kiefer’s is in a strange place. The corner of a building in an office complex. Initech, the company in “Office Space“, might be in the same complex. The reality is the place went in when every building there was Dell, but that was like back in 1997 when that entire street, block, and section of town was mostly Dell. Close to all the Braker A, B, C, D, E….buildings. Probably the reason they went in there.

Back to food, you didn’t need a history lesson of a failing computer company in Austin Texas. They have a daily “blue plate” special which everyone seems to go for. Last time we got there around 1pm, and they were sold out. Today we got there just after Noon and they were still painting plates blue. Goulash was the dish. I had to ask what it was, since I have not had it in, say, 20 years? I don’t know but a long time.

The Goulash was good. Basically macaroni, ground beef, and a tomato sauce. Just like Mom made, with the help of Hamburger Helper. No serious it was good, a huge portion and very tasty. Just too bad they are only open during lunch.

Third Base Sports Bar

Third Base Sports Bar on UrbanspoonIt has been a long time since I have been to Third Base downtown. Despite it’s age, I have to say that it’s still a nice bar. Many places start to show their age the longer they’ve been open, but they seem to keep this place looking good. Maybe they have been watching Bar Rescue with John Tapper.

I dropped in for lunch and the menu had plenty of choices, from sandwiches to full entree’s. I had the daily special which was a BLT. It came out and the bacon was less than crisp. Actually it was cooked, but just wobbly and needed some crispy action happening.

After trying to eat half the sandwich, I asked the bartender to see if they could make it right. She agreed that there is only one type of bacon, crispy. They made me a new sandwich with some crispy goodness and all was right in the world.

It is a great place to get some afternoon work done or wait on a meeting if you have to be downtown. Usually quiet enough to take a phone call, unless one of the owners is there then they kick the music up a little.

Hoover’s Cooking

Hoover's Cooking on UrbanspoonThis place is much like The Salt Lick, just when you think it can’t get worse, you are amazed that it does. I should have known this when I checked in on Facebook and a friend said “Prepare to be disappointed”. Boy was he right.

So it is still home cooking, if your mother forgot how to cook, or wait, when your granny gets senile and attempts to make what you remember was good. Kind of like that, but worse.

To start, there was some guy at the hostess stand bending the ear of the manager, or maybe it was Hoover. It looked like him, but he was skinnier, so maybe he is just not eating his food anymore. Which speaks volumes. So after a few minutes, the manager yelled at someone else to seat the two parties waiting. As we walked to our table, I heard the manager say “I am sorry, usually he (the waiter) is much more responsive”.

Special of the day was Chicken n’ Dumplins. Our waitress said it was ‘popular’ so I got it with a side of Mustard Greens. Greens good, Chicken yuck. The Chicken was smoked, and likely yesterdays smoked chicken. One piece was so dry that it could have been last week’s. The smoke flavor really overpowered what could have been a good, warm, down home dish. It was hard to eat, so I mostly finished the Greens. The Greens were still good, large chunks of ham balanced it and made the bowl just perfect. There was a little too much vinegar in the Greens but since it was cooked down nicely it was more sweet than tart.

Now on to the Buttermilk Pie. Another letdown. The bowl was hot and the pie cold. Mind you I sometimes like my buttermilk pie cold, as it lets the sugar settle and gets thick and tasty. This was not that. I am still not sure why they put it in a bowl and not on a plate.

Maybe the place is a little long in the tooth, maybe no one cares anymore, or maybe it is “The Salt Lick Principal”; when a restaurant continues to get traffic because people remember how good it used to be…or was it never really that good and really the only option, which made it better comparatively?

My recommendation? I’d skip it an find some place else.

Opal Divine’s Marina

Opal Divine's Marina on UrbanspoonI got in the boat and headed for a late dinner. It was awkward since they had no docks to park my boat at because this place is no where near a lake, river, ocean, or even pond for that matter. I never really understood why they called this joint a Marina, maybe because Captian Jack’s or Poopy’s Poop Deck was what it was called before Opal floated in. Who knows.

I met a friend there to just grab some food before heading home. At first we thought they sat us in a section that was closed. Not because there was no salt or pepper, sugar, or anything on the table, but because we sat there 10 min before a waiter showed up. And we were between the kitchen and patio door, literately in the walk path, so they saw us.

When the waiter finally came from outside, of course we were ready to order. I got what they simply call Nacho. I know what you’re thinking: just a single Nacho, that better be one big honking nacho. Well no, it is a Patty Melt. What? Yes a Patty Melt, with jalapenos and chili con queso. I cut the jap’s and left the queso.

It was good enough, but needed more queso, like enough to dip the fries in, since it was marginal at best.

At least you can still take your dog there (on the patio)…and I guess if you had a cat on a leash, or bunny, ferret, gerbil or some other rodent that could be leashed, they would be ok with that too.

Buenos Aires Cafe

Buenos Aires Cafe on UrbanspoonLunch time called for a break from work and the search for a different lunch venue. I drove around with a work buddy looking for Soul Food, which is almost impossible to find on a Monday. Small, locally owned shops are often closed Monday’s, we just forgot that. So since we were in East Austin we drove by the same haunts, many that I had been to before like Gene’s.

So we rolled up on Tony’s Southern Comfort, which I swore was just there (well it was over 2-years ago). Yet another causality of the Obamaconomy. Now the sign says Buenos Aires Café. Apparently this joint used to be down on SoCo, and why they moved up here is beyond me because it really doesn’t fit in.

The place is much nicer than Tony’s was, and it just seems a little too polished. Fruity even. Whatever, we were hungry. I went with the Milanese Al Plato, which is “two tender eye of round (not ground) beef cutlets breaded and fried”.  It was good, had a nice bread crumb crust, and a surprise of pesto style stuff under the breading. It was large for lunch and I could not finish all of it. I thought it needed some type of sauce or gravy with the cutlets. The fries were as to be expected and the salad was just OK. I would suggest it to someone that likes Pesto, but given the decision to do over, I would try something else.

My cohort choose two of the Empanada’s , Spicy Ground Beef and Spinach.  Both had flakey crust and he enjoyed them down to the last bite.

The thing that I most enjoyed was the Asparagus Cream Soup which was hands down the best thing we both ate. The flavor was awesome and it was rich and creamy.

I should have done the Soup for desert, as the Lemon Pie had all the appearances of being good, but the crust was cooked too long, almost burned, and it was solid as concrete. The waiter never asked how it was, only the nice lady (manager?) who cleaned our table. She said she would show the Chef, but did not offer to remove it from the bill…which we had already paid at any rate.

I’d go back, probably try the Empanada’s and another Soup de Jour. Even though it is a far departure from the soul food that was there before, it is a good haunt if you’re in the area.

Bacon

Bacon on UrbanspoonI had high hopes but it is possible that they need a little more time to fry out the wrinkles.  The bacon had food flavor, but was not trimmed well and there was a single stingy side that you could not chew. The bacon waffle, pictured below, was good, but same problem with the bacon. The Mason Jar coffee cake, just had bacon bits on top, and was drier than a martini. The thing almost turned to dust when I dug it out of the jar. We even asked the waitress about it, and she had no clue what the dish was, much less how it was suppose to be prepared.

There was a man , we assumed the owner, less than 3 feet away from us was busy talking to what appeared to all of his friends that came in. So he did not even hear our questions either.

Apparently the standard setup is only two flavors of bacon. They had  maple smoked and serrano pepper. Only one thickness, thick. They should at least mix that up with some thin.

The Broken Yoke BLT was marginal (photo on the right) Texas Toast was just buttered and grilled on the flat top. They could have put a little bacon grease on it, at any rate, but no.

The Biscuits and Bacon Gravy were cold. The gravy was warm, but went cold fast. While it was warm the favor was good, but the biscuits could use some Bacon Lard as well.

For a place that has such a namesake, in a world where things like Epic Meal Time make real inroads in taking Bacon to the next level, smart. This seems half fried.

I will give it some time, and re-visit, but unless they take a holistic look at the passion that is Bacon, it will shrivel up and go rancid.

Old School Grill

Old School Grill on UrbanspoonWe had to check out Old School Grill since it has only been open for two weeks. Mind you, we thought it served BBQ, but not, it is more of a New Orleans style cooking. This is back to the roots which Dan came from I hear.

Excellent, Everything was excellent. The table had the Shrimp Appetizer as well as the Scallops. The Shrimp was excellent, spicy and tasty. The Scallops where so-so, I can’t recommend them.

Then we  went with the Shrimp Diane, Pork Tenderloin, Pasta Jambalaya, Ceviche, and Chicken Fried New York Strip. Where to start?

The Shrimp Diane was very good, sun dried tomatoes, and a light butter sauce. Good, not to heavy served over angle hair pasta. The Pork Tenderloin was out of sight, excellent flavor, cooked to perfection, and seasoned perfectly. The Pasta Jambalaya was great, exploding with flavor, and the sausage was like icing on the cake. The Ceviche was good, very spicy, and tasty with fish and shrimp. The fish was cooked beforehand not just by the  citrus acid, so not exactly like it should be, but that might be due to health codes. The Chicken Fried New York Strip was amazing, very tender, pan fried, and yummy. Needed a tiny bit of salt.

For dessert we had the Parfait, Creme Burlee, and the Chocolate Malt Layer Cake. All were excellent with amazing flavors. The Chocolate Cake had a “cajeta” which is goat’s milk simmered down into a caramel like sauce, which is flavored with malt. It was bad ass!
The parfait was very good, with the glass dipped in chocolate. The creme burlee had an amazing flavor, but needed to be set a little longer, as it was more pudding than burlee.

Overall, a great place, and I am glad it is up in this area. Dan has done an amazing job on the new place. Sorry there is no BBQ, but such is life.

Trey told me that they will start up the BBQ Bus later this year when the restaurant is more established so be on the lookout for that. Also hit up their new Facebook page as well.

Casino el Camino

Casino El Camino on UrbanspoonI hate Guy Fieri and his f’ing hair. I probably misspelled his name, so I will just call him Gay Douche.
Nevermind. Since that douchetool showed up here there are all kind of family tourists that come into this joint. And it is funny as hell!

They walk in of the street where it is as bright as the face of the sun and walk into a cave that Satan would have trouble seeing in.

It ain’t like it was 5 years ago. Honestly it matters not cause you’re here for the burgers. Which are truly bad ass. They are huge, said to be 3/4 pound, but it looks like that after cooking!

I go with the bacon burger, as I refuse to order a Chicago burger. At least the have an Amarillo burger, with peppers.

News flash! A dude with an eye patch just walked in.

Back to the review…the fries are nothing to write home about, but the basket had crispy and soft ones to please all.

It is disconcerting to hear a baby cry (♪ ♫ ♩ ♬ in the ghetto casino ♪ ♫ ♩ ♬), while your eating, as this is still a damn bar!

Java Cafe

Cafe Java on UrbanspoonThe Grandma still runs this joint with a tight fist and it always shows in the quality of the food. Everything is great, mostly the standard American fair, but breakfast is served all day!

Everything at both locations is always fresh and good. I only wish she would open up a location in NW Austin, maybe around Lakeline.

I always get the Java Breakfast, cheap, and good, filling. Get some!

Taco Villa

Taco Villa on UrbanspoonSo my girl has eaten at Taco Villa for years and loves the place. I was hesitant as Taco Bueno in Abilene was so good, but Taco Villa stood the test.

I had a simple combo with a burrito and taco, both of which came *very* fast and were *very* fresh.

The taco meat was all meat, no fillers or peppers and seasoned well. The burrito was very good, a little taco meat, mostly re-fried beans, and a little cheese. The flavor was great, very good.

It amazes me that we do not have more fast food taco places just like Taco Villa in Austin, as Taco Bell Hell is just what it is.

Maybe there is a franchise opportunity for someone…bring the hipsters some better fast Taco.

Beef O’Brady’s

Beef O'Brady's on UrbanspoonWe wanted some good grub, sandwiches or burgers, so our host took us to Beef O’ Brady’s. This place is a local hangout in the evening where folks get cold beer and some burgers, play NtN Trivia and Poker, Darts and they have a game room for the rug-rats.

We all had the Patty Melt’s which were great. I had the Frisco Patty Melt which instead of grilled onions, it had crispy onion strings instead.

It was cooked to perfection, with a tiny bit of grill burn on the patty which gave it a very good taste. The patty has course ground pepper on it before cooked and that also made it work very well. The toast was perfect and I pared it with Seasoned Curly Fries.

The whole package worked well, I would recommend it and will go back next time I am in Amarillo.

Word to the wise, just stay away from Whiskey Bar, but that is a whole ‘nuther story.

Taco Bueno

Taco Bueno on UrbanspoonWell normally I don’t eat at Fast Food joints, nor do I post about them when I do eat there. It is just not the flavor of this blog. I mean they don’t have a bar at all.

Nevermind…

I was headed to Amarillo and the crew needed lunch. Since it was close off the highway per Urbanspoon.com we made a 1 min detour.

Mind you I have eaten at Taco Bueno before…but it has been maybe 20 years. They have changed as the run down joint in Georgetown was a guano pit.

Well we pulled up to this joint and it was HUGE! Maybe the largest Taco Bueno on the planet. This is in part that it use to be and old Santa Fe restaurant that they took over. There was actually a fire place!

I had chips and queso with beans and a taco. All was fresh and good and the manager thanked us for coming in with a huge smile. The beans are amazing. I want more of them now as I write this.

El Meson Taqueria

El Meson Taqueria on UrbanspoonI went here for Lunch as it is near the office. Some of the work guys have been here numerous times and swore it was good. They were right.

Mind you this is more Interior food than what you normally get around Austin and it shows. I can’t remember what I had, but it was like a port carne asada. One of the guys said in Mexico they actually crush up bugs in this dish. Now there were no bugs in this dish, but I can imagine they do in Mexico. Either way, I would have still eaten it if it had bugs in it, as it was that good.

There were no complaints with anything that we ate and we will go back when we get the craving.

Virginia’s On The Bay

Virginia's On The Bay on UrbanspoonPeople think this joint’s just another tourist place, but it is actually good. The bar downstairs is awesome as well as the tables on the rail. You can watch the marina and the boats go in and out while your drinking or eating.

The breeze always seems to blow and it is very comfortable even on a 90+ degree day like today.

20110605-021310.jpgIf you bring your own cleaned fish they will prepare it.

I had the snapper with the ettoufee and it was amazing. The crab cake was large, and done golden brown. The fried shrimp was also very good.

Great place to kick back and enjoy the afternoon if you are tired of sand in your pants!

Island Cafe

Island Cafe & Smokehouse on UrbanspoonI am so glad the other place we tried was so small we could not get in. The other place was busy (all 6 tables) and we were outside, folks that pulled up and had the same experience told us about this place. I have to say it is one of the best Breakfasts I have had in a while. The Biscuits and Gravy were awesome! The eggs tasted very good, not like some of the chemically ones I have had lately. Hash Browns were rich with butter and cooked perfectly.

The staff is friendly and more than one girl was wearing Peace Sign ear rings…Bunch of old hippies just doing good at cooking down home food!

Get some, but make sure you have shoes, shirt and even a bikini cover-up, I guess these old hippies don’t want to see your tattoo’ed hipster ass!

My only complaint is that while we were there eating, and with people waiting at the hostess stand, a Port Aransas Police Officer came in and sat down at a dirty table. He refused to wait in line and just made himself at home. Island Cafe is really not to blame, as the hostess was not standing there when it happened. Either way, that was the only issue.

Good food, good price…but cover up!

Shells Pasta & Seafood

Shells Pasta & Seafood on UrbanspoonShell’s is small, hell tiny even. There are maybe 9 tables inside. They do have a large deck, but sometimes in the heat, you really want some A/C. So wait, there is a back story. We were sitting in Driftwood, Texas having Italian at Trattoria Lisina when one of us said “We should go to the beach, and eat seafood for dinner.”

So the plan was hatched. We left Austin after 4pm, went the long way through Corpus Christi and got to Shell’s at 8:30pm. They close at 9pm.

I ordered the “Gulf Quail” which was the Chef’s special for the day, which is actually snapper “neck”, there is no eyes or anything, but it is the front of the fish. It was prepared in a wine soup, was difficult to eat, as you had to pull the meat off of the thing with a fork, but the flavor was AWESOME!

We also had Blue Crab Cake with Shrimp was good also, as one of us had that. Very fresh, crispy but moist and the flavor was amazing.

They were as nice as can be…and even though they close at 9pm, even after the sign was turned off, they didn’t turn anyone away. At 9:30 they took an order but said it had to be to-go only.

I would recommend Shell’s to anyone as they go the distance to just do it well.

Trattoria Lisina

Trattoria Lisina on UrbanspoonIf you like Mandola’s then you will love Trattoria Lisina in Driftwood. This is the flagship location for all the Mandola’s and it shows! The food is amazing! One of the specials today is the grilled venison and it was amazing.

All of the pasta is excellent, everything being made by hand from scratch. It is a drive from Austin, but worth it, especially if you just want to take an afternoon drive and get away from town to eat.

I have been twice and the food was amazing both times. I recommend anything on the menu, but it seems that both times I have been I get whatever feature they have for the day.

Hula Hut

Hula Hut on UrbanspoonI don’t go often to Hula Hut, as it is mostly lost its Austin appeal, but was downtown and wanted something close to the lake. One of the best reasons to go there is to watch the douchbaggery in boating as they try to dock boats.

We sat out on the new deck, and let me say it looks great after the fire.

The food is as always, it’s good. It’s not like it’s a Klondike bar, but still not bad digs for being in the location and doing the same thing for ever.

I had the Fish Tacos since they are always good, crispy and fresh. It was well enough food to fill you up…and of course you can see all the boating stupidity.

Chedd’s Gourmet Grilled Cheese

Chedd's Gourmet Grilled Cheese on UrbanspoonSo I went to try Chedd’s which touts itself as some bad ass grilled cheese place. Well they are right.

So I had the Smokey Cheddar with Bacon on White. Then a side of the Tomato Basil Soup, for dipping. Because only terrorists don’t dip there grilled cheese in tomato soup.

The soup was good, read good, thick and sweet.

It is setup exactly like a Jimmy John’s where you head to the back and order.

The sandwich was grilled perfectly, not too hot to burn the roof of your mouth. I should have let it sit and rest a little longer so the cheese would meld with the bread more….but it was still great!

Take a Wisconsin license plate in and get a free sammich.

Time to start stealing those!

Freddie’s Place

Freddie's Place on UrbanspoonI went for lunch. I have to say it is just not as good as it used to be. I cannot really put my finger on what it is, but the flavor is just not the same. When I used to go, I would tear into the burger and say WOW that is tasty, real fresh and yummy.

Now not so much. Last time I was there, I had the Frito Pie. Let me say this was complete shit. I expect chili to have meat in it, and all though they actually put meat in their chili, I actually counted the chunks of ground meat, since it was so sparse. Eight, yes 8 pieces. They also put beans in their chili, which is typical of yankee’s not Texans, so there was a major disconnect there anyway.

Also it came with jalapenos on it, which was not listed on the menu. So I sent it back. They re-made it, but in reality our waitress ate the first order. She said how much meat was in her’s after I said, there was not much at all. She must have been in a meat comma from the first order, as she didn’t seem to care.

Then comes the bill, not only was my food shitty due to the above, but they charged me $1 more for my meal than it was listed on the menu. Excuse me, 100 pennies more. On the way out, I ducked into the office area to tell her. She said, oh, wow, didn’t know that. Freddie was sitting right there and didn’t seem to care either. I don’t know if they ever fixed the price in the computer, but really could not care, as I won’t eat that again.

I guess Freddie is too busy making veggie fuel for the truck than trying to sort out these kinda things.

So it seems it is on the decline. Be warned.

Charlie’s Steak House

Charlie's Steak House on UrbanspoonIt has been almost a year since I have been to Charlie’s Steak House. First off, you can still smoke while eating in this joint. I know that sounds strange to some of you, but there are people that still do that. So deal with it….or not. They have smoking in the bar area, but you can’t smoke in the dining room proper. I just wanted to say proper.

They still have their daily lunch and diner specials. Wednesday is Roast Beef and Brown Gravy; Thursday is Enchiladas. The truck stop kind, not the type you get in a Mexican Food joint.

The food is still good. I really wish it was closer to my travels, such is life. I washed my hands in the men’s john and noticed a strange framed picture. It is a wagon family from the old west. Everyone is off the wagon, pissing. I mean really pissing. It is drawn that way. The horses, dog, driver, man, woman, grandma. Strange – real strange.

No matter, check this place out, the food is like your mother would make. Well ok, maybe not your mother, but say someone’s mother that was raised in the 50′s and knew how to cook.

If your lucky enough to have Charlie actually check you out, he always says “See you tomorrow.”

…See you tomorrow.

MVP Sports Bar

MVP Sports Bar and Grill on UrbanspoonI been here a few times, but only ate when they first opened. It was ok, but nothing awesome. Truth is it has not gotten better but in reality for the price you can’t complain.

Apparently on Monday’s it is half price pizza, so for 5 bucks you can basically stomach anything. Truth is it was not bad. The pepperoni pizza needed to be cooked a little longer. The flavor was good, but on once again, they just short pour you on everything…it was the pepperoni on the pizza.

That being said, I always go with the cheapest beer they have. As far as I know they can’t go buy 3/2 beer in Texas so I can count on the amount of booze I get.

That can’t be said for the cocktails, as this place is the pinnacle of short pour. I doubt most drinks even have an ounce in them. I really don’t understand how industry people come here and tolerate it.

Either way it is what it is.

Enjoy your 2/3rds of an ounce of booze, I will just keep moving to another place.

So go with beer steer clear of anything that requires the difficult science of pouring.

Shoal Creek Saloon

Shoal Creek Saloon on UrbanspoonI have been to Shoal Creek a few time for lunch and always get the lunch special. I want to try the Cajun but just never happens. A friend has tried the Seafood Etouffee and sad it was good.

I always seem to be here on Pork Chop Day and this mother is big! Bigger than tour face big! You could use it as a weapon, a tasty meat weapon.

20110510-124048.jpgThe patio is always nice even in the heat of the summer. The creek is nice if it is not stagnant and riddled with mosquitoes. No matter the fans keep down the malaria and the heat.

They have Wifi and you can actually get work done if you come to a late lunch. It is harder right at lunch as the place gets packed.

Enjoy…a tasty meat weapon.

Jardin Corona (Jollyville)

Jardin Corona (Jollyville) on UrbanspoonIt has been a while since I have been to Jardin Corona…maybe a year or so. The first time I went to Jardin Corona was when they opened their new location, in the early 90′s. I honestly can’t remember where they were, but I think it was where Ala Carrera was which is now MVP Sports Bar on 183 before Braker. Not sure, but I think. I remember when they moved to the current location as I had an office off of Pond Springs Road and we would eat close by.

The place is still good. I think the best thing on the menu is the Pechuga Jardin Corona. This is a chicken breast stuffed with cheese, bacon, breaded and fried. This is what I would get when going there.

Parking is not easy if it is later at night as the night clubs in that location take up many parking places, so get there before the drinkers get out.

I am not sure why, but notice how they have the Men’s and Women’s bathroom signs hanging by the ceiling by a wire.

Ski Shores Cafe

Ski Shores Cafe on UrbanspoonIt’s been a while since I have been to Ski Shores, probably close to two years. The place is still nice after the remodel. They keep putting money into it and it shows.

20110426-123241.jpg
It was quiet around 12:30, but it is a Tuesday. As always this is a burger joint, and the burger is good. It is all in the griddle they cook on, as the flavor of the meat and the griddle make it just awesome. I also had okra, which was ok, but get the fries.

They do have WiFi and you can park 8 to 10 boats without a hassle. The car parking on the other hand is not easy at all on the weekend so come out on a weekday.

They have Friday Family Movie Nights which sounds cool but probably riddled with kids, so your mileage may vary.

Wildfire

Wildfire on UrbanspoonI really can’t count how many times I have been to wildfire. If I were to harbor a guess, it would be in the 1000′s. You might think this is crazy, but almost every day for 4 years…it just adds up. I once set the record for most consecutive days which was 45. Mind you that was Sunday’s also. Anyone else that goes there for the most part never shows up on Sunday as they have families, jobs and other meaningless things to do.

In the past few years I only catch a lunch or two at Wildfire as I am just never up there. Believe it or not, I was there twice this week. Both times for lunch, today for Easter with the family.

They all asked what to get, to which I said, I have not seen the menu in years, I just get the Chicken n’ Dumplings. These are probably the best I have ever eaten, and I really don’t even like Dumplings.

I can’t vouch for their Steaks being what they used to, I did see they have close to 400 burgers on the menu (exaggeration), but it is still funny to me that the owner steals not only the items off of other menus, but the names also. Like The Quadruple Bypass is not on the Freddie’s Menu.

It is just not the same with the crowd and staff that it had years ago. Either way, Dumplings.

iPad iEatAtTheBar.com

We added a plug-in for the iPad so you can view the site in a ‘Flip board’ style. We think that this is very nice for the iPad. Mind you the iPhone site layout is different, but it is formatted for a smaller screen and works well. We will continue to use the WPTouch plug-in for iPhone and all mobile browsers.

Enjoy….with Bacon.

1431 Cafe

1431 Cafe on UrbanspoonWell I not been to 1431 Cafe in quite some time. I am not sure why as it is just up the toll way and easy to get to. They serve breakfast all day for thar that want it and everything else is just straight up American.

Scotty Stroop owns this joint and has a long history of running successful places. Years ago he told me and my Dad that he had to get 5 bucks out of everyone that comes in the door. Mind you that was in the 80′s at the Chuckwagon in Georgetown, but the point was to know your volume and costs and you can always make money.

There are numerous things on the menu that cost $8.09 and comes with two sides, so I guess with inflation you have to make $8.09.

I asked why my beef stroganoff was $8.95 with one side and only got shrugs.

Still the place ain’t bad, if you stick with what you could eat at Mel’s Diner.

Carlos ‘n Charlie’s

Carlos 'n Charlie's on UrbanspoonYou can’t party your frog off at Lunch…well some of the folks that come here can. I have before, just not today.

Today sucked. Sucked hard. Tax day is tomorrow, which I am not ready for and I get a ticket on the access road. Really? When a Sargent gives you a ticket, you can bank on Austin Police Department to just be generating revenue.

So the day is basically shot, so I thought I would just come out to Carlos n’ Charlies to have lunch. Believe it or not there are numerous items on the menu that are good. The Burger is a standby, other morsels that are tasty are the Shrimp and Crawfish Appetizer if you are cheap and like fried stuff.
The Cobb Salad is good to, I add grilled chicken. But today I branched out and took a chance, I mean with a ticket already under my belt today, my luck has got to change.

And it did, I got the Fettucini with Shrimp and Chicken and had them add Bacon for more of the Carbanara flavor. It was good, much better than you would think getting fettucini from a tourist joint on the lake.

They also have WiFi and the Bartender can usually find a plug for you. This makes for a great place to work the afternoon away if the wind is not blowing a thousand miles an hour.

Be careful if your in a boat, the water is shallow!

Wild Bubba’s Wild Game Grill

Wild Bubba's Wild Game Grill on UrbanspoonSo I wanted to try this joint before I took folks from the office. Let me tell you it kicks major ass! It is also right at the F1 track.

I had the Kangaroo Burger which was amazing. Kangaroo is 98% protein, so it was real lean! I will be back for sure, as I have to try the elk, yak, bear, wild boar, antelope, and buffalo burgers!

The place is small with little parking but Wild Bill is very nice and comes to talk to each table.

Will be back for sure!

Austin Restaurant Week – Spring 2011

I just wanted to let everyone know that Austin Restaurant Week is an excellent opportunity to get out and enjoy some great food. Basically it is a fixed price for 3 course meals and many of the best places in town.

Check out their website at http://restaurantweekaustin.com/

They do Lunch and Dinner so there are no excuses for not taking advantage!

Gino’s Italian

Gino's Italian on UrbanspoonI can’t say I remember the last time I have been to Gino’s, but it has been too long. I went tonight as visitors were in town staying in Round Rock. I never remember going there at Dinner, seems that I have only been at lunch.

No matter, the place is banging, spot on, goodness. The wait was only 15min at 7pm even though they had numerous large tables. The service was excellent!

The waitress said she had been there 16 years, and I did remember her from the last time I was there. Since I had not been in so long, I asked for her to recommend either the Lasagna or  Tortellini Carbanara. She highly recommended the Carbanara, and I have to say it was just amazing. We also got the Eggplant Cannelloni which was amazing.

For sure we will be back! I was mad at myself for not thinking of Gino’s before now, it has been way to long and we will surly go back again.

And don’t call me Shirley.

Maudie’s

Maudie's on UrbanspoonI was out for Lunch yesterday and we stopped at Maudie’s. The South Lamar location is nice(which is where we went), but I like the North Lamar location more. Either way, Maudie’s gets a bad rap, but I go there and eat what I know is good. The Sausage Migas Con Queso.

These things are so good it makes me want to crawl up in them and take a nap with all those eggs, cheese and sausage.

So I can’t really speak of anything else except the Josie’s Enchiladas. I used to eat those tasty morsels, but the Migas are just way to damn good and they serve them all day, every day.

Haters hate it matters not, the Migas are all in.

Church’s Chicken

Church's Chicken on UrbanspoonHaters gonna hate and I don’t know why, it think Church’s is excellent. It always taste fresh and you can get real chicken not just tenders.

The honey biscuits are awesome. I had not eaten here in 20+ years but I now know why my Mama Jean loved this place. They have sweat tea also.

I would get the tenders or the three piece dark, but make sure you try the fried okra!

Cluck cluck.

Red Lobster

Red Lobster on UrbanspoonSome of you might be thinking that I have lost my mind going to Red Lobster, but honestly I like the biscuits. They are somewhat pricey for the food, but it is always good.

I mean your not going to scream at the moon and say how good the place is, but still, if you drown anything in drawn butter it tastes good.

Last night I went because the folks I was with from out of town wanted to do it. Either way, it was still good.

Mind you I don’t recommend going to the one on 183@IH35 (Anderson Lane) as that place is old and run down. I mean I don’t think that they have changed the carpet since 1977 when it opened.

Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks on UrbanspoonIt seems guys like to go to Twin Peaks, I am not sure why. Maybe it’s the boobs, I am just not sure. Ok it’s the food.

I went to lunch with coworkers today as one of them had the frequent diner card thing and wanted his free sandwich.

Today I got the Club. It was not the best thing u have eaten there. I would stick with the burger, chicken fried steak, pot roast.

Had the dumplings and they were tasty too, so was the apple desert.

Los Pinos Mexican

Los Pinos Mexican on UrbanspoonLos Pinos is always good foe breakfast tacos. In fact I think they are some of the best you can get mainly because the flat top griddle is seasoned well. The breakfast tacos are mixed when cooked also, not just made then spooned into a tortilla, so the sausage is mixed with the eggs when cooking. The potatoes are added on the grill too so the flavor is integrates with the taco, not just spooned on.

The only other thing I eat besides breakfast are the Tacos Al Pastor. These are excellent all spiced up with pineapple.

The flour tortillas always stand out, as the taste like heaven. Once again I is just the good flavor the flat top gives them.

Be warned some of the wait staff border on retarded, on waitress continues to come to the table and ask ‘anything else’. Maybe it is lost in translation but you ask that at the end if the meal before the check not every time you visit our table. Maybe someone never told her or it is just the Engrish. No sure, but ever time she asks, I say ‘Just our Tacos’.

By the way, it is a Tabbedout location.

Posted in Restaurants | Tagged , , , , ,

Jim’s

Jim's on UrbanspoonJim’s is always easy and good. It is nice to see that the continue to be a diner and cafe style place.

Mind you some of the wait staff are full on bat shit crazy.

I usually do breakfast as you can’t beat their eggs, hash downs and sausage, which come the only way it should in patties! The pancakes are some of the best there are, I am not sure if the season the griddle with lard and butter but they always have the perfect ‘scald’.

The burgers are also good and it is nice to see a place still understand the little thing, like a logo paper sleeve I you get their signature Frontier Burger. They could just use a plain white one like most but this is how they been doing it for years.

If your in San Antonio there are two on every corner, I mean there might be more Jim’s than Starbucks!

Try the milkshake next time too!

Flores Mexican Restaurant

Flores Mexican on UrbanspoonI don’t come to Flores often because it is always packed. I guess that makes it good? Who knows.

It’s not bad, it is just not stellar. I get the nachos or the flautas and have not be displeased.

On a side not I feel I want to ask when daycare time is over. It seems in the last few weeks in mostly all the restaurants I go to there are hoards of roaming kids with parents no where to be found. I guess that is cheaper than daycare or a babysitter, hell the parents can even get drunk I guess.

Back in my parents time this would not have happened, we would be sitting down and shutting up, then would eat our meal quietly. Guess as Bob Dylan said, these times they are a changing.

Panda Express

Panda Express on UrbanspoonThis is only the second or third time in my life I have eaten at Toxic Panda, wait sorry Panda Express, not sure why I said that. Nevermind.

So some friends come here often because it is close to their house. So I went with them one time and it is easy and seems to always be on the way to where I am going.

It is fast Chinese as if we need to make Chinese any faster than just shoveling slop covered in a brown sauce out of a bowl, inherently it is fast. I guess they just had to take it to the next level. Meaning hire a bunch of Mexicans to cook and serve Chinese food to Americans. Viva la …whatever.

I usually eat the Benji Beef, sorry Beijing, and what ever else looks good behind the sneeze guard. It really is not bad, I can’t say it is good, but it is better than Toxic Bell, oops there I go again, sorry Taco Bell.

Chingalela la revolution… or ching chang chong whatever.

Habanero Mexican Cafe

Habanero Mexican Cafe on UrbanspoonHabanero’s is only known by the true connoisseurs of Tacos in Austin. They claim to smoke their meats over Pecan Wood, even though that is not what really hits your at first. It is the mere fact that the food and meats are just so flavorful.

I always eat the Beef Fajita and Barbacoa because the flavor is out of the world. The Beef Fajita Ranchera are good if you are into spicy items. I have not had the Gorditas but one of my co-workers at lunch today got them and they looked banging. A buddy always recommends and I forgot that until today.

This place is truly a gem in the Mexican Food scene in Austin. Known by only a few in reality. This is no Chuy’s as it is not over done corporate crap.

At lunch I suggest you get there before 11:15am as the line starts to grow. Today my brother and his crew showed up at 11:30 and had to wait close to 35min to get a table….all while we enjoyed our lunch watching them wait.

Viva la Habanero!

Sam’s Boat

Sam's Boat on UrbanspoonAs for a bar goes you either love or hate this place. I ENT come often, but can’t help but crave the wings. The wings are some of the best in town because they are twice cooked, fried then broiled!

The the other fare is what it is. Most people come for Crawfish when it is in season. I personally go with other menu items such as the club.

As for the bar scene it varies more than a bi-polar schitzo. Cool and low key some nights, douchbaggery in full effect other nights. Parking always sucks unless you get there around 10am, just before they open.

There are still a few bartenders that will take care of you, until they burn out, which could be any day now.

The Water Tank

Water Tank on UrbanspoonAs always I try to stop into The Water Tank for Tuesday Tacos mostly because they are a buck. Yes 1 dollar! And these things are good, I mean they are not over thought, just like you would cook up at home. Ground meat, a packet of seasoning, shell, and what ever you put n it.

The burgers are good too, just griddle style and tasty. They have lunch specials daily, and everyday a salad is only $1 if you buy any other food. So for 4 bucks you can have a tacos and a salad.

Good grub no matter how the economy is.

The bars scene at night is good, eclectic, sorted, but always friendly.

Ross’ Old Austin Cafe

Ross' Old Austin Cafe on UrbanspoonRoss’ has been up on Lamar before it was in town. Close to the scary Mickey’ Thirsty Lounge where they apparently have ‘set-ups’.

Ross’ is good. Good in a down home, like grandma makes it kinda way. True to that thinking I actually got a pickled okra on my salad, which I have to say my Mimi always had but I have never in my life eaten. It was tasty, like a pickle. True to my grandmother Mimi’s meals, I even put on three pickled beets. Are there other kinds other than these beet red pickled ones?…Nevermind.

I had the Chicken Fried Steak which was good but the Chop Steak looked much better.

This place has been here a while and the family has been in Austin since almost Waterloo if you read their history. I can’t support or deny that, but I can say if your looking for some simple, good home cooking, this should be on your list.

Patsy’s Cowgirl Cafe

Patsy's Cowgirl Cafe on UrbanspoonI have been back to Patsy’s twice in the last two weeks. I have not been in over 2 years, in part because I was not close to it, but mostly because it got to the point where it was horrid two years ago.

Times have changed for Patsy’s. The place at some point finally found a cook that they could keep and a groove that they are staying in. I would say if you have not been back, then go back and try it again.

Last week I had the Sandra Bullock, which is Turkey and Guac, sandwich which was very good. Today I had the Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich on the Blue Plate Special. All and all it was good, fresh, came fast and was an ok deal for lunch.

I still have co-workers that refuse to eat the fish, as that got them sick 2+ years ago, but I can’t speak to that, as I have not had the fish, nor will I on that feedback alone.

Mileage may vary.

The Oasis

Oasis on UrbanspoonI went out to The Oasis last night with some friends. We didn’t eat at the bar because there is only one reason to go out there and that is to sit on the decks to look at the lake.

We got there late and the sun had already set, but we were hoping that we could catch the thunderstorm that was rolling in. We missed it due to it going around us.

We ate no matter, and as always it was not the ritz carlton, but better than food from a roach coach. I always defend The Oasis as I treat it fro what it is, sunset and drinks. The reality is tue food is good if you compare it to any place that feeds over 1000 people an hour. Banquet services can’t do that without a limited menu. So it is really not that bad.

Had the nachos which were really filling, it was not worth 14 bucks but as I said it is what it is.

Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks on UrbanspoonI came to Twin Peaks with friends for the Sunday Car Show. The show somewhat sucked as there were only a few cars, and some were the cholo type that were all ‘hit the switches, bitches’…so really not my scene.

So we came in to eat. I usually do lunch at this joint and let me tell you lunch is the A Team of their servers….Sunday not so much, if F has a team, they are still sleeping, these girls are the replacements for the F Team.

I usually go with the Chicken Fried Steak or the Pot Roast. The pot roast is good like your mom makes, if she was a Yankee and it came out of one of those steam bags…yet I digress. No matter what to get, choose the cream corn for the side, it’s sweet and spicy! Yum!

If there is a game on, be warned the audio will be loud, not fun loud. Talking is even a challenge.

But, you go there for the food right?

Little Ceasars Pizza

Little Caesars Pizza on UrbanspoonSo I have been seeing the people on the side of the road touting $5.99 “hot and ready”. There is usually a chick holding the sign, so hot and ready makes me giggle…nevermind.

So their deal is they always have pepperoni or cheese pizza hot and ready, just roll in and grab it. If it sits there more than 15 minutes or so, they chunk it and make new one.

This is quite possibly the best innovation in the pizza world in years. I mean you will waste some, but the cost is so low that you could waste half of them and still make a profit.

So for those of you that plan no farther ahead then what you see out your windshield, this is perfect.

Mind you it ain’t the best pizza in the world but for less than $6.50 out the door it is good enough.

Uncle Billy’s Brew & Que

Uncle Billy's on UrbanspoonHit Billy’s for Happy Hour to watch the Lake. This is not real Que, but for a brewhouse it is good. The location is what makes this place. Upstairs is awesome when the weather is great!

The food is good but I can not classify it BBQ even though they do. It is more of a Memphis Style over real Texas, bit most won’t come here for food.

Zed’s

Zed's on UrbanspoonReally astonishing location just off of IH35, with views of the creek and greenbelt. The outside seating is wonderful as I overlooks a grassy knoll where they host live music later in the week. It wits facing the east so the building shades the outside decks. The menu is very Texas with venison in the meat loaf, as well as other game.

We started with the Pulled Pork Taquitos which were $4 off at Happy Hour. These 20110324-055752.jpgwere amazing, with a very hearty pork flavor rolled and fried in corn tortillas. They came with three dipping sauces; hot sauce, jalapeño ranch and re-fried beans.

We tried the fish tacos and meat loaf for our entrees. Both were good, the meatloaf needed a little salt.

The disappointment was only in that not all ingredients were listed on the menu, one being the jalapeños in the pico on the tacos and there were peppers of some type in the meatloaf.

The Mac and Cheese was excellent but there was not enough of it. The smashed potatoes were good and had a rich butter taste.

All and all the food was good, and the happy hour should not be missed.

Brick House Tavern + Tap

Brick House Tavern+Tap on UrbanspoonThe bar is far too small for a brew pub this size. Two taps at the bar for all beers, no serve bar. They actually reduced the size of Joe’s bar. On the up side the server a cylinder of 100oz of beer, with a tap on the side of it. The parking is horrid, so the success here is questionable. Liquor selection is skinny at best, but at least the serve breakfast all day!

“Not the same ”
Doesn’t likes it

The quality is just not what it used to be. After additional locations, and the addition of the bar, the food is just not as good. The grinders used to be great, fresh and tasty. Now the meat does not taste as fresh. Even the dough is not as good as it was. It is also not appealing to have numerous employees who come in when they are not working and parade in and out of the kitchen getting what ever they want. It is obvious they are not working and just in the way.I will not be going back, even just to try the bar.

Abuelo’s Mexican Food Embassy

Abuelo's Mexican Food Embassy on UrbanspoonAbuelo’s Mexican Food Embassy
Amarillo, Texas

“Still Busy….still so so. ”
Doesn’t like it

I know many like Abuelo’s, but it is just a so-so joint. Sorry all, but it works, but is far from the best you can get. Now mind you I am from Austin and have 100′s of choices in Tex-Mex, but this is really corporate for a operation that has only 3 locations. They can accommodate large groups, which is good, but do not take reservations (mistake!) You can call ahead and put your name on the waiting list so you can jump ahead of some people. The hostess stand, even though cordial to our party this time, still has issues and is where the real problems are in the restaurant. Management needs to address those issues, as they put far too many responsibilities in the hands of girls that are 16-18yrs old, and they really do not understand how to interact with guest and give good information on how long wait times are. The problem might be with management as well, as when I was leaving, a wait staff notified a manager that a table needed to talk to them, at which point he said “I already talked to them and they ‘just need another table’ and I will get to it when I can”. This was a table that had over 20 people at it, which would be auto-grat for 20% but management did not seem to care.So be warned.

“Hit rock bottom”
Doesn’t like it

I would say that it was going down hill, but over the past year it has just gone from Ok, to passable, to disgusting. The last time I was there, we ordered a Chick Brest, which was RANCID. We were amazed that the cook did not smell this when he cooked it. After complaining they attempted to give us another, but who would want another chicken breast deep fried in the same grease that a rancid one was cooked in. So the food continues on a downward spiral, and most is uneatable. I would contribute this to absence of owners, and everyone else in the kitchen from manager to cooks are high school kids. I refuse to go back.

This place is strange, as it is inside the Auction Barn. That being said the food is GOOD!I put this on my list after Man vs. Food went and had the Chicken Fried Steak. I have to say the Chicken Fried Steak was EXCELLENT. Pan fried (not deep fried) and thing and tender. Tender enough that you tore the steak with the knife. I had the CFS with breakfast, and the rest of the meal was great.Everyone that went had good food and liked it.They are only open Friday evening, but for Breakfast and Lunch all week long.Nice friendly people, great service, awesome food!

Wanted some Diner food, so we headed south from Amarillo.Excellent choice! Chicken Fried Steak was tender and cooked perfectly, with an excellent scald. The Pot Roast, which was a daily special, not on the menu, was excellent. Chicken Fried Steak was covered in white gravy and the Pot Roast in brown gravy. They also have sweet tea, which has not seemed to catch on in Amarillo as of yet.The salad was awesome (side salad) and the Ranch Dressing was PERFECT! Cold and thick and tasty! Also had the fried pickles, which were expensive, but had 10 total fried pickles on the plate (which is too much!!!)The only downside were the sides. The broccoli cheese casserole has some sweet red peppers in them, which gives it a strange taste. The Loaded Mashed Potatoes were not hot enough to melt the butter, cheese and sour cream. Our waitress, Robin was spot on and very, very courteous. Also a great place for the Kids as they model trains that run around over-head!

Well, I used to drink and eat at Reed’s Supperclub up north. Reed was always into wine, so his new place seems to fit.
I was down there a week or so ago and the scene was hopping for a Wednesday. It seems that there is a ton of local traffic due to the close neighborhoods. The bar is small, as well as the restaurant, but the outside deck is HUGE.
The fair (which I did not eat) is light and pasta style. Some continental type menu items. Even though it is busy and somewhat a cold restaurant, the vibe keeps it warm.
I will have to go back to try the food, but the wine selection will impress even the biggest wine snob.

Do not let the name fool ya, this is a Diner style place that serves some gourmet coffee, not the other way around. Now mind you I did not have coffee, and I AM NOT saying that their coffee is gourmet, but the name is just does not give a true representation of the restaurant.

A bargain and the food came fast. Short order fast. Then at noon the place got REAL busy, but they still turned the tables.
Go here, disregard the name. It is a full kitchen place, not just a coffee shop.

“Good food, weird scene”
Likes it

I was out there and as you would guess, I ate at the bar. Now mind you it was Sunday night, after a full moon mid-week, but I would classify this place and weird no matter what the moon is doing.
There was a couple at the bar giving Dr. Phil advice, who met on match.com and had been together less than a year.
It is a singles scene, but for the older crowd. In fact, if you think Cool River is a Cougar Paradise, this place is a wildlife refuge for Cougars, Gold Diggers and the likes.
As for the food, it was GREAT. The lasagna was awesome, even if it needed a little more meat. The chicken and goat cheese pasta dish was good as well.
The bar was nice. Had a cool “fat man belly” curve to it and there were bunches of cocktail tables. The bartender was awesome, even poking fun at some of the folks and a fight that broke out last week between two old guys over “I saw her first”.
I hear this place is bumping on Wednesday and Thursday’s, but that was from an older friend who hits it up for the older chicks.
So to each their own.

I went to Manuel’s last night. I knew that it would not be what I expect, but why not. It was close and the wind was blowing, is there a better reason?
Let me say first that most folks that read this will like the food, hell even love it.
But for me, it is just not there. The presentation and flavor is good, the atmosphere is nice, but after I eat here I always an left wanting … more, better, something else.
Mind you this is not Tex-Mex, but still last night the Chile Relleno del Mar was good. The seafood and flavor great, but it was still lacking, especially for a $19 dish.
This place just never blows up my dress no matter what I eat. There is a bright side, when the weather is nice the patio is awesome. There is also three booths in the bar that can hold 4-5 people, which makes the place warmer and more comfy. One has an adjacent boot so you might be able to get 8 friends at that one back booth.

Blu Parrot Lakeside Bar & Grill

Blu Parrot Lakeside Bar & Grill on Urbanspoon Blu Parrot Lakeside Bar & Grill
Lake Travis, Texas

“Horrible!”
Doesn’t like it

Horrible!
Where do I start. Since there were some storms I didn’t boat over but instead drove. So let me give you a walk through…
You have to park around 2 blocks away from the restaurant, and if the water park next door is in operation (holidays and weekends) it cost $5.00 to park.
The entrance is marked as well as Al Capone’s Tomb, so let me give you a hint: VIP Marina walkway. And this is by no means easy to traverse. I have no idea how they get away with this since there is no way a wheelchair could get down the slope driveway without careening out of control.
More bad directions and signs, left down into more abyss,  or toward a parking area (we should have parked there). As we pass the two porta-potties, we see it.
There she stands, a concrete hut with a bar and a kitchen that is 10ft by 30ft. Doors open you can see in. The whole place is painted blue. How cliche.
I sit down at the bar, there is a sorted crowd. Some old lady that hits on every guy that comes in, and a little touchy. Mostly other boat folks, and what had to be Marina people due to being over dressed.
The menu is skinny, real skinny. Don’t be fooled by their slogan “A delicate balance between fine dining and dancing in the sand”. Unless you think “fine dining” is a kitchen that could hardly pass health codes, and “sand” is concrete…Back to the menu. Burgers, three Entrees, some kids food. The Kid’s Corndogs are $7.00, YES, SEVEN DOLLARS. Burgers are $9.50.
You can verify if you find the website, because even google can’t find it. The only way I found it was being told from an ex-bartender. www.TheBluParrot.com.
So how was the food. Well, third world countries make this place look clean. Seriously rat on a stick in Tijuana would be cleaner.
As we were eating we watched what looked to be the manager touch chicken breasts with his hands while cutting, plop them on a plate for the customer, then take a small cut piece from the cutting board and pop it in his mouth. Eating it while delivering it to the bartender. Then turned around without washing his hands to touch a bun, lettuce, and another chicken breast to make a sandwich.
Then cut the sandwich and split it with the bartender.
Yummy.
Also right out of the gate, I knew there would be problems…since there was no sink where patrons could wash their hands. The porta-potties had hand sanitizer in them, but how is this up to health code?
Anyway, stay away from this place unless you just came to drink. It is horrible.

So yeah, this is another corporate joint, which in most situations I would rate lower than…well anything, but this location stands on it’s own.
Yea most of us know that Chick-Fil-a puts sugar in their batter before cooking, thus the reason we flock to this like drug fiends.
That being said, all locations are good, but the Braker Location sets the standard this corporation should strive for. Their scald on the chicken seems to always be spot on, not like the Round Rock or Mall locations. They serve what I would says is the Prime cut of Chicken….
The fries are always crisp and not soggy, the chicken always fresh, and the flavor always spot on….
…many locations do not seem to have this figured out.

Well, I went to Boulevard Bar & Grill the first week it was open years ago….it sucked.
That, like many things changed, they have solidified their niche.

Be warned, the bar is small, so there really is no “eating at the bar”.

Do not let the name fool ya, this is a Diner style place that serves some gourmet coffee, not the other way around. Now mind you I did not have coffee, and I AM NOT saying that their coffee is gourmet, but the name is just does not give a true representation of the restaurant.
I had the Java Special, 2 eggs, 2 bacon or sausage, 2 toasts, with hash browns and a coffee or tea – $5.69
A bargain and the food came fast. Short order fast. Then at noon the place got REAL busy, but they still turned the tables.
Go here, disregard the name. It is a full kitchen place, not just a coffee shop.
Only real drawback is if “Mama” is working the register…she owns the joint and has the personality of  a Prison Guard….but when I had an issue with the waitstaff, she acknowledged it, and the next week, that person was G.O.N.E.

Come down on Saturday’s, get some of the Queso smothered chopped steak and listen to some great music.
And as for the Chopped Steak, they smother it in their famous “White Cheese Queso” which is decadent. It is well worth the buzz kill that it provides.

This is not the best place to have drinks on the lake, nor the easiest to park, but the food is top notch! The burgers are good and the Catfish is down right awesome.
They have live music Friday and Saturday, often no cover for bands that you would pay up to 10 bucks downtown.
The drive is not worth it if your coming by land, since it is a long way around the lake from Cedar Park, but if you are on a boat, the trip is easy, since they are just across from The Lakeway Inn.

Well calling this place a Cafe is a stretch. No mind you the food is good, but it is upscale.
This is one of the Trudy’s restaurants where they were trying to cash in on the SoCo nitch, hence the name, but be warned, it is not a diner or cafe at all.
That being said, the food is good. American with a flair. Brunch is somewhat “fruity” with big plates small portions. Most dishes are $10 or higher so as you can see it is really not a cafe and more of an upscale joint.
Food is good but it aligns more with the high-end crowd and not the standard SoCo folks.

Well none of that is the case at the Avery Ranch location. I ate at the bar last night and the service and food was excellent.
The queso smothered chopped steak is awesome, I usually cut the peppers. Also the baked potato soup is perfect, but let me tell you it is so thick that it will kill almost any buzz.
This location is more family friendly than others and usually frequented by the crowds that live close by.
Good joint, good service, good change from the previous location that this one replaced.

The burgers are awesome! Some of the best flavor I have had in a burger in months…due to the griddle that they make them on I am sure.
Do note that they have small and large burgers. I got the small, which is the size of a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder. It is an excellent size for a light meal, but if your hungry go for the larger size.
The fries are hand cut (probably not on-site, but that style) and very tasty.

I have been putting off reviewing Arkie’s for almost two months. The reason was I expected it to be bad at some point…but it just has not been. In fact it keeps holding up to my standards that usually find flaws. Not Arkie’s. They continue to rise above the standard.

All of it was just good, home cooking.
There is always a variety of specials for food, as well as customers. From cops to zoo keepers, city workers, iron workers, road crews, lawyers, scallywags and scallions. Arkie’s has them all and they seem to love the food.
I am going there for lunch today!

I have not been to Maudie’s in quite some time, so when a friend at work suggested it for lunch I jumped on the chance.
Well not exactly, it was more like, “Yawn, OK, I have not been there in … I can’t remember.”
The South Lamar location is small, maybe has 16 tables inside, so in the summer it is not the best place unless you happen to catch a table. We got there at 11:50 and there were no tables inside. Well there was one table that had a hippie scribbling what had to be her new screenplay, which I am sure will make it big.
We sat outside close to one of the two fans they have. (Note that there are like 10 heaters, but 2 fans) I ordered the Josie’s Enchiladas. Here is the menu line item for them:
Josie’s Enchiladas – $7.50
Attention cheese lovers! Two cheese enchiladas covered with our great chile con carne sauce, onions and then baked. Finished with our savory chili con queso.
HOLY GOD WAS THERE CHEESE!! I loved them! Wait let me re-state that – I LOVED THEM!!!!
They were better than sex, even good sex. There are two kinds of cheese, one inside the enchiladas, and then the Queso. It is almost a bitter/sweet symphony with the two kinds of cheeses. They bake the dish before the queso goes on, so it is just plane AWESOME.
Next time I will have them sub out beef enchiladas for cheese to cut down the intake a tad.

I have to agree, this place has hit “River-side-swamp-shack” to a Tee. I don’t think Martha could have done better than they did, but mind you the food is good.
Do get there early on weekdays since they close at 8pm, and the staff does not seem too accommodating when you come in at 7:30, as the first thing out of her mouth was “we close in 15 min”. (I was told they close in 30 min at 7:10pm).
The food is good, damn good Cajun. Etouffee was awesome. The gumbo I would skip on, just did not have that scald that it needed.
The Muffaletta’s were good and they have a Veggie one as well.
The decor was just plain odd. Mostly wall to wall shelves with different kinds of Cajun Hot Sauces. Ball burner this, tally-scalder that, hot as hell what-not, and so on.
I did notice by they front door they had Chicory Coffee Blend, this is not something you find much outside of Louisiana.
Strange place this swamp shack be.

“New Vegas Style Sunset”
Likes it

So I finally went back since the rebuild and WOW. It is much different. This place used to be a shack on the side of a hill, now it is more like France meets Spain meets Vegas in Austin.
Where do I start?
First, the food seems better, and by the looks of the place the built the kitchen maybe 4 times as big.
Rock, rock and more rock. The place is mostly steel and rock now. There are a few lower decks that are wooden, and some of the highest decks have wooden floors, but steel, tin and rock are everywhere.
The sunset’s are the same, but the vibe is different. Back to the Vegas influence. So you have Joe’s Bar, Longhorn, and a variety of other names for each little bar. Each of which look like something that you would see in the food court in Vegas. One bar has Betty Boop by the door and chrome tables and chairs. The Lodge has wicker and leather chairs (what a fashion fopaux) and looks like what you would see in Jackson Hole, Wy.
The old stage is still there on the north side of the building and if you look down you can see where they chopped off the old deck that was burned.
The entrance is much different. You used to walk into a set of rickety doors and there was a crappy little gift shop to your left. This is no longer. The outside garden is replaced with mostly Handi-capable sloping walkways, with all the greenery encased in stone flower beads. No more old cedar fence, or the back entrance to the restrooms, and when you walk in there is the Grand Staircase leading upstairs.
Also the restrooms, from what I remember were somewhat of a lean-to on the building, or made out of a broom closet. These have been improved greatly, but I miss the fan in the wall that buzzed.
To each their own, but it is not what it used to be, kinda like taking the Broken Spoke, burning it down, and replacing it with Graham’s Central Station.
Your mileage may vary.

On a side note, there were two guys behind the counter. One I seemed to recognized from before – he was cutting meat. The other one at the cash register looked new. He suggested that I try a mixed meat sandwich, Chopped Beef and Pork Loin, or some such crap.
Here is a tip, if you BBQ is so bad you want to mix two types on a sandwich, give up the ghost and sell the location. I am sure it is worth more for the Real Estate than you could ever make selling shitty BBQ.
And FYI, it is now CASH ONLY.

“Three Words: Bone Marrow Salad!”

I heard this place had a bone marrow salad, one in which you actually eat the marrow out of the bone.
Well since I have eaten nearly everything that comes from a cow,  I had to try it.
Needless to say it is different. It is not for the squeamish. When you dig it out, it looks more like mashed up Flan than anything else.
The taste is very interesting, since there is a ton of butter in there when they cook it.
The dish is basically a Cow femur, cut into three chunks. There is a tiny amount of green lettuce to garnish, but the main portion is the marrow.
I took the leftovers home to a friends dog…who thought he had died and gone to heaven.
As for the place in general, it is nice, but a little cold in it’s ambiance. Steel and Concrete. It is very quite in the Bar, but I assume that when this place gets better established it will be more lively.
They have a variety of oysters, of which the ones we had ware marginal.
We did not checkout the rooftop, but will do that next visit.
Go eat a bone!

I ate here for lunch and had Red Beans and Rice for an appetizer, then Po-Boy lunch special.
The Red Beans and Rice were good, but not as spicy as I would expect. I got the cup, which was served in a coffee cup, and even with me trying to mix it up (not easy with a big spoon in a small cup) the bottom still had just rice and no sauce or beans.  Some of the rice was still hard and un-cooked.
The Gumbo was good, but lacking any real kick. It also tasted ‘burnt’ as if the bottom of the pot burned and they stirred it up into the Gumbo. It had more of a burnt taste than anything.
I would go back to try again and would be hopeful that it would be better, but I feel that most all of their dishes are not a spicy as  most would expect their Cajun to be.

I went there two weeks ago to eat steaks. We had some drinks at the bar and then ordered.
The heading on the  Steak Section says “Allen Brothers Prime Steak and Chops”
Under that is listed:
Dry aged this-n-that
Dry aged something-or-nuther
Prime Delmonico Ribeye
Prime Bone-In Ribeye
Dry aged Fillet Mignon
First thing, I thought, “NOT ALL OF THEM ARE PRIME”. So I asked the bartender who said “all of our steaks are Prime”. This I did not believe, corporate would not take the time to label two of the steaks as prime in the name, and not the others.
Let’s ask the manager. Who said “Well we want to be truthful, and even though the heading says Prime, we list only the steaks that are Prime.” Well is the Fillet? “No”
So you list only the steaks that are Prime with Prime in the name? “yes”
So we had the Delmonico Ribeye.
It SUCKED. Tuff as boot leather. I will go back and try again, but they are way in the hole as it is with me.

Well after all the hype jess91872 headed out there last weekend.
The place was PACKED  for 11 on a Saturday. Much like Rudy’s you wait in line, and order at a counter, behind which there are some thousand odd people cooking, assembling, and shoveling burgers at folks. This includes hand making shakes and the most notable station behind the counter was the “burger toasting machine” that toasts and butters the bun in one step.
They write your name on a bag, then call your name when the order is ready. EVERY DAMN TIME  they yell ” YOUR MIGHTY FINE BURGER IS READY!”
The burger was good, but over rated if you ask me. There are numerous burger joints here in town, and I visit the local ones that are just awesome. Top Notch, Hill Berts, PTerry’s, Huts and others.
Noteworthy items:
Jess had his shake stolen off the counter and they had to re-make it. I wanted to go find the clown that took it, since his name was written in marker on the cup – he would not let me.
Cool hand washer in-front of the bathrooms.
Best thing in the building, windows into the Men’s Room. From the dining room, there are three plate glass mirrors (one-way windows). When you go inside the Crapper, you can look at on the dining room. Strange…

This place was great the first 60 days of operation. Even though they were working out the kinks, the food was just plain good. Then they lost the Chef/Cook, hired new, still problems. Went from hot sandwiches to cold with Cold cuts. Changed the Tortilla soup recipe, skimped on everything. It got to the point where Patsy wanted this place to be a music venue, where folks would stop in the evenings and spend 2 hrs eating, drinking and listening to music, that might have worked if it was not “on the way to somewhere”. No one that stops here would spend that much time eating, since they are either going to the Airport, Bastrop, or coming from either place. Good idea, but bad execution. She has been running restaurants in Austin for years and should know better. Well I have not been to Dot’s since she re-opened in Pflugerville, so I stopped in for lunch.
It is not what I remember. The chicken and dumplings was marginal. I consider chicken and dumplings a dish, not a pot of dumplings with a wing and thigh plopped on top. I expect it to be mixed up and in (like Wildfire in Georgetown).
I wanted to go with the Chicken Fried Steak, but they were out (it was 11:45 and there was no line either)
The side dishes were good as usual. So I did give it a “I Like”
Judging by the lack of people in the restaurant others probably share my view as before at the previous location it would be standing room only at 11:45.

“Old location was good…”
Doesn’t like it

Back when they were in the location where El Aroyo is now this place was top notch, but after them moved to the Highway it went downhill. They still do have some of the best Tortilla’s you can get since they are hand made onside, and thin…not thick like the press machines make. Oh and they are HAND Made by a lady – you can even watch. Never the less, the food leaves a lot to be desired. The quality has gone down, probably due to the high traffic that the location brings. Skip it and go down the road to El Rincon.

I think that Kobe has some of the best Spicy Tuna Rolls in town. Mainly because they roll them in the tempura crunch – which must have ‘crack’ in it – because it is so good. I usually eat at the bar (this is my theme) but if you eat at one of the grills, I suggest the Chateau Bruene. Their meat is good, but since it is a Japanese Steakhouse, they really don’t cook the steaks like us Texans, but to each their own.

This place is horrible. It was recommended by someone at the hotel as a Old School Vegas Steak House. If by Old School they meant Crap, then that’s what it was. The place was WAY over priced for the lack of quality in the steaks. Don’t be fooled, Dry Aged does not mean Prime! The steaks were just par, in fact Outback is better. The King Crab was absolute shit. The first order was rubbery as if it was cooked wrong. I sent it back. The second order was the same. They offered a 3rd, but I said to the manager “If you can’t get it right after two orders, you are only wasting my time. Thanks for the bread and tea.”The waiter explained that the King Crab is flash cooked at the purveyor and then frozen and shipped. So it IS frozen, not fresh, and they don’t even cook it on-site. For $56 bucks you would think of more, but Red Lobster is better than this. In the end my meal or lack there of was free. They wanted to give us King Crab to “take home” but still why would I want to cart around their bad Crab?Stay away from this place.

I was told this was an excellent place to eat. If I had only known the Chop House was a block away….I will say the Bar on the roof-top was very nice. The food was another story. They have the assortment of menu items that most high end Steakhouses have, like the wedge salad, but do not be fooled. They get their meat primarily from a personally owned ranch with Hereford Cattle which is not know for being excellent meat, but the idea must sell. That being said, the Fillet was flavorless. It was cooked to order as I wished (rare), but there was no flavor. My No flavor I mean ZERO.Tasteless meat.If you want to go eat a steak, try the Chop House, or get in the car, drive down 6th street – west until it merges into 7th St, and go to the 3100 block of 7th. Well, I am not new to Eddie V’s as I have eaten at the Austin (downtown) location close to 200 times in the last year. That being said, I found myself in Fort Worth the week Eddie V’s opened it’s newest location. I went on Saturday after Monday and Tuesday delivered an Ice Storm to DFW and everything was shutdown. I heard Friday Night was PACKED, and I have to say Saturday was the same. The wait was close to 2hrs, as to be expected with a brand new restaurant in the area. The bar was slammed, and we waited 30 min just to sit at the bar (to eat).I met numerous Fort Worth folks who were VERY nice. Coming from Austin, it is not often you see old money, but this place oozed it. Rolies and cowboy boots abound. How was the food? It was EDDIE V’s. Excellent. Their menu features a few different items than the other V’s including a Banana’s Foster that was “better than sex”.Personally I would give them 2-3 more weeks before visiting, so as to allow the staff and bartenders to mesh and get into the groove, as that is essential. All that being said, V’s is at the top of their game, featuring Allen Brothers Steaks highest end of meats. The Fillet is all I ever eat, and it’s flavor is bold and pronounced throughout the entire cut. They cook their steaks in an 1800 deg oven which is higher than any other in the State of Texas.Get there when the newness wears down and stop by the Bar. Tell Andy “that guy from Austin” sent you.I promise you will not be displeased.

So much to say. First of the bar is just awesome. When your up at the 109th floor having a cocktail, it is just hard to describe. So let me give you a tip first. It cost like 8 bucks to go to the observation deck. It is free to “go have a cocktail”. Go to the restaurant stand on the ground floor and tell them you want to go to the bar to have a drink. Then even if you don’t (I recommend you do) you can get off the elevator and go to the observation deck for free. So who said you couldn’t do anything in Vegas for free?On to the food. I have been to Threadgill’s far too many times over the last 20 years. It still leaves me wondering why people go there.I mean I know it was once part of the Austin everyone wants to be a part of, Armadillo World Headquarters, and the fact that Janis Joplin played there, but that does not make up for the fact that they don’t seem to use salt or pepper in ANY of their food makes the place lack luster.Even after you season it yourself it still is not any type of Home cooking I have ever eaten, for sure not one of an 8th generation Texas.

He suggested that I try a mixed meat sandwich, Chopped Beef and Pork Loin, or some such crap. Here is a tip, if you BBQ is so bad you want to mix two types on a sandwich, give up the ghost and sell the location. Another Drinker and I went there two weeks ago to eat steaks. We had some drinks at the bar and then ordered. The heading on the  Steak Section says “Allen Brothers Prime Steak and Chops”Under that is listed:   Dry aged this-n-that   Dry aged something-or-nuther   Prime Delmonico Ribeye   Prime Bone-In Ribeye   Dry aged Fillet Mignon First thing, I thought, “NOT ALL OF THEM ARE PRIME”. So I asked the bartender who said “all of our steaks are Prime”. This I did not believe, corporate would not take the time to label two of the steaks as prime in the name, and not the others.Let’s ask the manager. Who said “Well we want to be truthful, and even though the heading says Prime, we list only the steaks that are Prime.” Well is the Fillet? “No”So you list only the steaks that are Prime with Prime in the name? “yes”So we had the Delmonico Ribeye. It SUCKED. Tuff as boot leather. I will go back and try again, but they are way in the hole as it is with me.

Of the three steaks we had, Filet, Ribeye, and Top Sirloin, the Ribeye was the best, but could have been much more tender. I have been going to Eddie V’s for years. I like both locations, but LOVE the downtown bar. All of the bartenders are awesome. Tell Bruce, Lance or Jason – Tim sent you. Do not be fooled, Eddie V’s is a Steak House and a damn fine one at that. I have been preaching this place for years, but after the Texas Monthly review…I am now validated by folks that are far more eloquent than I. Items that are a MUST off the menu:
Steak:
Fillet – Best in town; Bone in Fillet – If they have it GET IT; Tomahawk – Huge bone in Ribeye.
Fish: I am not much of a Fish guy so… Auhi Tuna Tartar – a must (catch it on happy hour for 1/2 price) If you want a fish entree, ask Lance at the bar, he is from Hawaii and knows fish.
Sides: Go for the Mac and Cheese, anyone that has the stones enough to put Truffels and truffel oil on Mac and Cheese, stands by the fact that it is the best.

Like I said, best place in town, consistently for years.

2. a lunchroom or dining hall, as in a factory, office, or school, where food is served from counters or dispensed from vending machines or where food brought from home may be eaten.

This place is neither. Fred’s Donut Shop, and they sell sushi…yeah it just don’t work.

I was there on a Sunday at noon, the hostess did not offer us a Breakfast menu, only the lunch/dinner. Well offer is really not the right statement, we walked in, she walked off holding menus so we followed. They were out of Chicken Pot Pie (their signature item) and it would take 45 min to cook more. We passed and ordered other items…and after 40 min waiting for what we ordered, we complained. Should have waited for the Pot Pie…which they actually brought us.Service was horrid, even though there were like 8 managers there. We even asked one manager about the breakfast. “We don’t really publish it after 11am but we do it all day” – how do you sell something you don’t tell anyone you have?He explained that he was not sure every cook could make breakfast, but if we wanted ‘next’ time he would personally make it.If you hire cooks that can’t make some scrambled eggs and fry some bacon – you got bigger problems than no one knowing you don’t service breakfast.WTF?Pass on this place.

Go with the Catfish or the Burgers.I eat the Catfish Toe’s (smaller bit size with more crispy).Live music sometimes, outside tables with a covered roof, so a good place when the weather is nice. Small A/C dining, so on hot summer days I would pass

Doesn’t like it

As corporate goes, this is good BBQ, but white all the options for BBQ right here in their corporate home, how do they make it? Probably on all the folks from some other state that don’t know good BBQ and ones that one go east of IH35 or southeast of town.At least the good BBQ shops are less busy due to non-savvy BBQ eaters visiting Rudy’s.

Cool River Cafe

Cool River Cafe on UrbanspoonCool River used to serve USDA Prime and their steaks were very, very good. Now it is Black Angus (not certified Prime) and the steaks are lacking. The nightlife is weak and the crows is aging. The same bands have been there for years and it is getting boring. At least you can still smoke here, even cigars. The Cigar Room is awesome and the staff and management are great to the regulars. Some nights depending on the Band that is playing the crowd can go from Cowboy to seedy to down right thugs, but Monday and Tuesdays are quite since there are no live bands.

It is an excellent place to get work done. The only drawback is the speed, as they are on DSL, and the Access Points are only 11mbps. Check out the Cigar Room for the quietest place to work. The music is usually quite, but due to the system they feed it with, sometimes songs get louder for no reason. On Thursdays and Fridays the bands often setup and tune in the afternoon, otherwise you can work and talk on the phone if needed. This is a smoking bar, with smoking permit. Smoking starts at 2pm daily.

Wirelss SSID: Cool River – Bar Area / Cool River – Dining Area
Secure: No
Outlets: Ask bartender to plug in behind the bar, Behind couches by lamps in Cigar Room
Quiet: Very Quite (Cigar room and bar, unless bands are setting up)
Speed:
Slow
Overall Workability Rating: 4 (1-5)  Due to Quietness.

Water Tank

Water Tank on Urbanspoon Water Tank

“Damn good burger!”
Likes it

So I ate at the bar last week for lunch. I have to say the burgers at Water Tank hold their own with any in town. Mind you these are not your gourmet burger, just more of a diner style.
The flavor is awesome, so much so I have had a burger three times this week.
They do take-out as well as eat in, so sometimes I just don’t eat at the bar.
