Shell’s is small, hell tiny even. There are maybe 9 tables inside. They do have a large deck, but sometimes in the heat, you really want some A/C. So wait, there is a back story. We were sitting in Driftwood, Texas having Italian at Trattoria Lisina when one of us said “We should go to the beach, and eat seafood for dinner.”
So the plan was hatched. We left Austin after 4pm, went the long way through Corpus Christi and got to Shell’s at 8:30pm. They close at 9pm.
I ordered the “Gulf Quail” which was the Chef’s special for the day, which is actually snapper “neck”, there is no eyes or anything, but it is the front of the fish. It was prepared in a wine soup, was difficult to eat, as you had to pull the meat off of the thing with a fork, but the flavor was AWESOME!
We also had Blue Crab Cake with Shrimp was good also, as one of us had that. Very fresh, crispy but moist and the flavor was amazing.
They were as nice as can be…and even though they close at 9pm, even after the sign was turned off, they didn’t turn anyone away. At 9:30 they took an order but said it had to be to-go only.
I would recommend Shell’s to anyone as they go the distance to just do it well.
